Microsoft to End Support for Windows XP by 2014

Microsoft windows 300x240 Microsoft to End Support for Windows XP by 2014Microsft’s Chief Executive, Steve Ballmer revealed that company has sold some 400 million windows 7 license worldwide. Even then almost one half to two third of world’s personal computers are using Windows XP – which Microsoft is planning to not to support after 2014.

Ballmer told this at Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angles.

Support for Microsoft XP will end on April 8, 2014 and  security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available after this date.

In a blog post, Microsoft said:

Windows XP had an amazing run and millions of PC users are grateful for it. But it’s time to move on. Two reasons:

1) Extended support for Windows XP is running out in less than 1000 days

2) there’s an OS out there that’s much better than Windows XP.

Microsoft said that there are seven things that will help you move to Windows 7 and one of them includes Download of Windows 7 Enterprise 90-day Trial.

Windows 7 which was released in October 2009 has shown rapid increase in density as compared to windows XP in the recent years. According to data from Net Applications, currently almost 27% of worldwide PCs are using windows 7.

Microsoft has also claimed that Internet Explorer 9 is now “the most popular modern browser running on Windows 7 PCs in the US”. Company said that 17% of Windows 7 PCs worldwide are using internet explorer 9.

Talking about windows 8, Ballmer said that it is expected in late 2012 and furthermore he bared that windows 8 will be “a true reimagining of Windows PCs and the dawning of Windows slates.”

Make Your Own 120 GB Portable Hard Drive in Less than Rs. 2500

speed portable thumb Make Your Own 120 GB Portable Hard Drive in Less than Rs. 2500Portable storage technology has evolved abruptly in recent couple of years. As Chinese products jumped into local market, high capacity flash drives have become very much common.

I still remember when, for the first time, I saw someone using flash drive; back then I actually didn’t know what it was (2002 or 2003 I think). And now every Tom, Dick and Harry has got a flash drive.

Talking about hard drives and flash drives, external storage of high capacity in lesser cost is still what everyone wants. And here we got a desi method of getting a portable drive of our own, with affordable price tag.

Making Your Own Portable Drive:

This method comes handy for those who have plans to shift from rotating media drive to SSD (solid state disk) or bigger hard drives. Here are things you gonna need!

Things you need:

§ One used 120GB rotating media 2.5” (laptop’s) hard drive Average price is approximately Rs. 2000.

§ Portable hard drive case that comes equipped with a USB 2.0 pin attached. Average Price range is Rs. 250 to Rs. 800

It takes less than a minute or so to fix your hard drive in the case and you are about to make a portable drive of your own in couple of minutes.

P.S. Portable hard drive case will have data and power pins, simply plug them in with the hard drive and you are done.

(Pictures attached at the end of the post will help you to setup)

Advantages:

§ Very much cost effective, as 16GB USB flash drive will cost you around 2000 and using this method you can create your own 120GB portable USB drive (not available in market in this size).

§ It works the same way as any other USB drive, i.e. plug and play.

§ Another feature that it incorporates is, you can have your partitions intact. As in case of flash drives and memory cards, your computer reads only first active partition but here all partitions will work.

§ Very fast data transfer speed as compared to flash drive (v2.0)

§ Can be used as a backup drive for large data.

§ Larger storage capacity.

Disadvantages:

§ Bigger in size as compared to flash drive.

§ Vibrations, that may increase if fitting is loose.

§ Rotating media inside, so you have to be careful while in operation and movement.

Please note that I am in no way comparing this drive with flash drives, nor promoting it in anyway over flash drives. Yet these drives come handy when you consider size to cost ratio. Moreover you have to be careful about purchasing used hard drive from market – make sure it’s in good working condition with no bad sectors on it.

Following are the pictures that may help you in getting the idea more clear.

Apple richer then US government: report

Apple richer then US government: report SAN FRANCISCO Smartphone giant Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States government, a report said.
The latest figures from the US Treasury Department indicate that the debt-ridden country has an operating cash balance of $73.7bn (£45.3bn).
Apple's most recent financial results left its reserves at $76.4bn.

New iPhone 5 rumors: Leaked case suggests 'radical' redesign

Are these designs for cases to hold the next iPhone? A British tech blog says they appear to be.

Another week, another round of iPhone 5 rumors. This time, it's an apparent case for the unreleased phone that has Apple fans buzzing.

Mobile Fun, a British mobile-phone blog, has posted images of what it says is the design for a next-generation iPhone case leaked "from a Chinese case manufacturer."

The case, and an image the blog says was later sent to them by another manufacturer, suggest what they call "massive changes" to the iPhone 5, or whatever it will be called.

Among them: what appears to be a larger, roughly 4-inch display screen, a curved rear panel more like earlier iPhones than the iPhone 4, and a hole on the back -- about where the Apple logo is on current phones. Some Apple observers speculate that hole indicates a possible new location for the device's antenna, replacing the iPhone 4's much maligned side antenna.

"If these images are authentic -- and we have every reason to believe that they are -- then the iPhone 5 is a radical evolution of the iPhone concept, and a bigger departure from the iPhone 4 than previous case images have shown," the blog post reads.

But MacRumors, a popular blog focused on, well, what its name says, isn't convinced.

"We suspect all of the images and information are coming from a common source, but we don't necessarily believe it to be true ...,"wrote Arnold Kim of MacRumors. "[W]e received a reliable tip that this is not what the iPhone 5 will look like. As well, several other credible news outlets have said that the iPhone 5 will look largely similar to the current iPhone 4."

Based on multiple reports, all of them from unnamed sources due to Apple's loose-lips-sink-ships policy on details about upcoming products, the next version of the iPhone will be announced in September.

The China Times pinpoints the iPhone 5 release to the second week of September with an initial order of 4 million units, MacRumors said.

A better camera, a faster processor, a bigger screen -- all have been mentioned repeatedly in rumors that inevitably swirl every time a new Apple product is in the works.

And there's obviously an audience for every one of these speculative tidbits.

A recent survey of about 3,000 consumers showed that 35 percent of them plan to buy Apple's next phone when it hits the market -- despite not knowing anything about it yet.

Microsoft to Acquire Skype

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: “MSFT”) and Skype Global S.à r.l today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.

The acquisition will increase the accessibility of real-time video and voice communications, bringing benefits to both consumers and enterprise users and generating significant new business and revenue opportunities. The combination will extend Skype’s world-class brand and the reach of its networked platform, while enhancing Microsoft’s existing portfolio of real-time communications products and services.

With 170 million connected users and over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in 2010, Skype has been a pioneer in creating rich, meaningful connections among friends, families and business colleagues globally. Microsoft has a long-standing focus and investment in real-time communications across its various platforms, including Lync (which saw 30 percent revenue growth in Q3), Outlook, Messenger, Hotmail and Xbox LIVE.

Skype will support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.

“Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.”

Skype will become a new business division within Microsoft, and Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Microsoft Skype Division, reporting directly to Ballmer.

“Microsoft and Skype share the vision of bringing software innovation and products to our customers,” said Tony Bates. “Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype's plans to extend our global community and introduce new ways for everyone to communicate and collaborate,” Bates said.

“Tony Bates has a great track record as a leader and will strengthen the Microsoft management team. I’m looking forward to Skype’s talented global workforce bringing its insights, ideas and experience to Microsoft,” Ballmer said.

Speaking on behalf of the investor group that sold Skype to Microsoft, Egon Durban, managing director of Silver Lake, said: “We are thrilled with Skype’s transformation during the period of our ownership and grateful for the extraordinary commitment of its management team and employees. We are excited about Skype’s long-term future with Microsoft, as it is poised to become one of the world’s most dynamic and comprehensive communications platforms.”

Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress over the past 18 months under Silver Lake’s leadership, increasing monthly calling minutes by 150 percent, developing new revenue streams and strategic partnerships, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.

Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Limited in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The parties hope to obtain all required regulatory clearances during the course of this calendar year.

About Skype
Skype is communications software whose purpose is to break down barriers to communication. With an Internet-connected device, families, friends and colleagues can get together for free with messaging, voice and video. At low cost, they can also call landlines or mobiles virtually anywhere in the world. What is Data Recovery?

Data Recovery Explained: The Basics

In the most simple terms, "data recovery" refers to the process of recovering data from a hard drive, removable disk, or other type of electronic storage media (such as a backup tape drive, RAID array, server, database, flash memory, etc.) when the data is no longer accessible via normal means.

There are many ways to store data: hard drives, removable disks, CDs or DVDs just to name a few. No matter how reliable these storage products might be, any mechanical or electronic device can fail to function normally. In addition, there are many non-failure-related causes of lost or inaccessible data, such as accidentally deleting files, formatting/repartitioning a disk, or a forgotten password. Sometimes disaster strikes and a storage device might physically be unusable, such as in the case of a fire, a spill or other damage. When normal methods for accessing data fail, data recovery is the process we use to regain safe, reliable access to that data.

The Data Recovery Process

Data recovery can be a simple process in many cases, and in some cases may require exhaustive, detailed work to recover the data. However, any data recovery case typically involves the same general process for recovering the lost data:

  1. Evaluate the media and provide an initial determination of the extent of the damage, potential for recovery, and work involved to recover the data.

(Many data recovery companies will charge fees for this evaluation or may only provide a "blind estimate" without actually evaluating the media for recovery. Iomega Data Recovery provides a guaranteed free in-lab diagnostic evaluation* of your media by one of our technicians before we make an estimate of what will be needed to recover the data. We know how important your data is, and we don't take chances.)

  2. Estimate how much work will be involved, how much data can be recovered, what steps will need to be taken, and what the cost will be to recover the data.

(Most data recovery companies will promise you a quote or a flat-rate to recover your data, sometimes even before they've looked at your media! Iomega Data Recovery Services won't "guess" when it comes to recovering your data. After a diagnostic evaluation of your media, we'll give you a no-nonsense quote of what it will really cost to get your data back, or even if there's a program you can use to recover the data on your own. If you aren't satisfied with the offer, we'll send your media back to you, guaranteed.*)

  3. Mirror any data that may be accessible to safe location if the media in question is actually physically functional when it is received. Using this process increases the chances for a complete recovery and preserves the original media in case further access is required.
  4. Repair any electrical or physical damage that may be preventing the media from accessing the data.
  5. Recover the data through "logical" (software) processes that work with the raw data on the disk or drive.
  6. Analyze the recovered data to be sure it is intact and usable, then provide a report of the results of the recovery (what data was recovered, what was the cause of the data loss, etc).
  7. Return the restored data on media of your choice as soon as possible.

What Is Torrent?

Many members of the computer-fluent community engage daily in an activity widely known as "torrenting." Torrenting is a highly popular peer-to-peer file-sharing activity that allows participants to send and receive files from other computers. Although it's often used for purposes that may border on copyright infringement, such as the sharing of music, it has widespread legitimate use in many programs and systems in the world.

  1. How Torrenting Works

    • All torrenting takes place using a torrent program. Examples of torrenting programs include uTorrent, Azureus and the original BitTorrent. These programs allow your computer to send and receive files on a specific port and interpret the data from .TORRENT files. .TORRENT files contain all of the information on a specific torrent--who started it, what the torrent contains, and how to download and upload information corresponding to that torrent. When the .TORRENT file is opened by a torrent program, the torrent program connects to other users who have portions of the torrent and downloads the torrent from them. Upon receiving portions of the torrent, your computer becomes able to upload (or "seed") the file to other users. Once the torrent program has received all portions of the torrent, it assembles them into a file using the directions found in the .TORRENT file.

    Trackers

    • Torrenting begins and ends at large networking servers known as trackers. Your torrent program (or "client") connects to these servers using a list found in the original .TORRENT file. Trackers have a list of all users connected to it and which files they're able to seed. Your client picks from these users and downloads data from them accordingly. Upon connecting to the tracker, it registers your computer and the files that you yourself are able to seed. Trackers also keep logs of one's ratio--how much your computer uploads, measured against how much your computer downloads--and determines the amount of bandwidth you receive.

Ratio and the Fair Share Policy

    • All torrent trackers incorporate a "fair share" policy, which restricts or grants access to bonus torrent bandwidth accordingly. Fair share policies basically say that if you're not seeding as much as you are downloading ("leeching"), you will receive less bandwidth from the torrent. Conversely, if your seed-leech ratio is high, you will download files from the torrent much quicker than someone with a low ratio. Priority on the tracker is also given to those with higher ratios. This means they will connect to other users on the server ("peers") more quickly.

    Torrent Culture

    • A large culture has sprung up around torrenting. Found in websites all over the Internet, these cultures generally promote fair share policies and file-sharing honesty, and discourage copyright infringement or file theft. Generally, these communities are invite-only. Open membership is only granted at specific times, generally once a month. Anyone wishing to join who doesn't want to wait until membership becomes open must secure an invite from someone else who's already part of the community. Other torrent sites are completely private. For example, the torrent site known as "What.CD" requires potential users to solve several puzzles to gain membership, and then undergo an interview and a speed test (to determine whether or not a user can upload efficiently) before acceptance.

    Controversy

    • Unfortunately, since its inception, peer-to-peer torrenting has been highly controversial. Because trackers cannot and do not keep track of what information can be found in their torrents, the potential for copyright infringement, file theft and even child pornography exists. Organizations pursue legal activity against torrent trackers and users every day under claims of copyright infringement. However, despite all of the controversy, torrenting remains a very popular way to transfer large amounts of data from and to users at a very quick speed. Many computer companies, such as Blizzard Entertainment, even use torrenting to allow users to download their software.

Though its stable release came in March 2011, it has been in the market since 2007. More than 21 million downloads of Joomla reported between March 2007 and Feb 2011. There are over 6000 free and commercial plug-ins available from the Joomla extension directory.

Joomla is ideal for fantastic looking website designs.

clip image0051 WordPress, Joomla and Drupal [Preview]Drupal:

Drupal, a CMS released in Jan 2001 offers a sophisticated programming interface for developers; however no skills are required for basic website installation and administration.

Drupal presentation layer allows designers to create highly usable, interactive experiences that engage users and increase traffic. Drupal themes offer a wide variety and support rich customization. Major Drupal sites include whitehouse.gov and data.gov.uk.

Majority of people in blogging world in Pakistan may not know much about the Joomla and Drupal as WordPress is dominant CMS as it offers almost every thing for bloggers and it is as easy to use and customize.

While Joomla is making a name for itself in recent months with its greater advertising campaign but it will certainly take some time before it can replace the WordPress as no.1 CMS.

PK.MSN.COM Launched

msn pakistan PK.MSN.COM Launched

MSN has launched localized version of its online portal, which was functional for quite some time, but they have rolled out the enhanced format just recently. Though in it’s initial stages, but yes, it’s live and all visitors from Pakistan are being redirected to this localized page.

MSN – Microsoft’s portal, is considered as World’s earliest online content provider of news, entertainment, and common interest topics and now they want to give you (slightly) localized experience – here’s the url: http://pk.msn.com

You won’t find too much local content for now, but there are a few news about Pakistan  - oh and have you noticed, Hina Rabani Khar featured there as well?

While on the other hand, photo gallery, entertainment news, politics, business and technology are all about US and India. Have a look at following  news featuring on the top. I wonder what it is doing here when MSN has another dedicated portal for India, and pretty developed one indeed.

Habib Bank, You Seriously Need to Start Behaving with Customers.

Habib Bank Limited thumb Habib Bank, You Seriously Need to Start Behaving with CustomersI didn’t know before today that commercial banks in Pakistan can literally threat you, le
t alone the misbehaving part.
Even if you are a three years old customer, who has paid every credit card bill in last 40 months before the due date, I didn’t know they can call you in – shout at you, threat you, humiliate you and what not.
I had this HBL Credit card, I was founding member, which means I was using their credit card since their service started.
This month I didn’t pay my bill; that was mainly due to a fact that I had lost my credit card and I was in process of getting a replacement, which was likely to reach me in a week or so. So for the first time in my life, I took this bill casually and thought of paying it next month (just like we sometimes do with electricity or PTCL bills)
So here’s the timeline, just to let you know how pathetic a bank service can go:
§ Bill’s due date was 22nd July 2011 and amount was Rs. 8,800
§ I didn’t pay the bill, as mentioned above (this is only the second time in my three years plus relation with HBL that I couldn’t pay my bill before the due date)
§ I get a call on July 27th 2011 about payment – I thanked him for reminding and told him that I plan to pay the bill next month.
§ I get another call the following day (from same guy), and he said this:
§ When are you paying bill (Dude I told you, I am not planning to pay this month)
§ You must pay the bill, there’s a procedure to follow – we can’t spare you even for a week, or tell me your address so we may collect the card – I was like, Hey man, you have my address, be my guest – come and collect your card.
§ Next thing he said was shocking: “Pay the bill or we will tell your father about this” #WTF?
I didn’t have in my wildest dreams that a bank can go to this level. I wonder, if they do such things to other customers too? If they do – it’s disgusting, highly offensive and ill-mannered.
Habib Bank, claimed as the largest bank of Pakistan, it’s time for you to do little schooling and learn manners before you get kicked by every customer.
And by the way once you are done with learning manners, there are terms called “Professionalism”, “Customer Profiling” that you must get familiar with.
This makes me realize that Telecom sector is far better than others!
Update:
Thanks to Sam, one of ProPakistani reader, there’s a SBP rule according to which banks can’t harass their customers for payment collection, here’s the link: http://www.sbp.org.pk/psd/2009/Anexx/Anexx-C1.pdf
It says:
Banks/DFIs must ensure that their recovery/collection officers should not resort to any verbal or physical harassment of the delinquent Credit Card holder, their family members, referees and friends during recovery/collection efforts. Recovery/Collection officers should also not humiliate publicly or in private or intrude the privacy of the Credit Card holder’s family members, referees and friends.
